In the next weeks when the new ZyXEL "Elite 2864" and "Supreme 2864" modems will become available on the market, there we will receive also many new different firmware data files for the flash eproms. So it is now "high noon" to manage the names of these new files before they will be released and nobody will know which is thr right one for his/her modem ... In the Elite 2864I manual Jesse Ou-Yang (the author of the manual) and probably Calvin Ma (the chief developer of the ISDN-part) named the firmware files as follows: E2864IE.001 "E2864" = Elite, "I" = ISDN, "E" = EuroISDN (DSS1) D-channel E2864IG.001 -"- -"- "G" = German (1TR6) D-channel E2864IA.001 -"- -"- "A" = American D-channel, S/T interf. E2864IU.001 -"- -"- "U" = American D-channel, U interface E2864.001 "E2864" = Elite 2864 (analog only, without ISDN !) The extension of these firmware data files reflects the release version. v1.00 will become the first officially released version. All versions of v0.0x are betatest firmware codes ! There will be also an "S2864" (for "Supreme 2864") and "B2864" (for the internal PC-card ..) in the future Because the length of the firmware data files is about 500 KByte it would be very useful for distribution within ZyXELnet Fileecho "ZYXFIRM" if these files will be compressed by a popular packer software, eg. PKZIP. Then the redundancy of these files will become more inefficient, so I suggest to rename the compressed files as follows: E2864IE0.Z01 Elite 2864I, EuroISDN (DSS1 D-channel), v0.01 E2864IG0.Z01 Elite 2864I, German (1TR6 D-channel), v0.01 E2864IA0.Z01 Elite 2864I, American (S/T interface), v0.01 E2864IU0.Z01 Elite 2864I, American (U interface), v0.01 E2864__0.Z01 Elite 2864 (V.34 only, without ISDN), v0.01 S2864IE0.Z01 Supreme 2864I, EuroISDN (DSS1 D-channel), v0.01 S2864IG0.Z01 .... and so on ... S2864IA0.Z01 S2864IU0.Z01 S2864__0.Z01 B2864IE0.Z01 Incarnate (= internal PC card) 2864I, EuroISDN (DSS1), v0.01 B2864IG0.Z01 ... and so on ... B2864IA0.Z01 B2864IU0.Z01 B2864__0.Z01 the number left of the period is the major release number, the "Z" of the extionsion is for "compressed by PKZIP v2.04g", and right of that "packer's fingerprint" is the minor release number ! The "packer's fingerprint" is used in the same manner as it is used in compressed nodelists for FidoNet or ZyXELnet: Z = PKZIP J = ARJ A = ARC O = ZOO R = RAR There will be also release notes for these firmware date files which should be named in a similiar way: "E2864I_1.RLN", or "S2864__1.RLN" The quick reference guides will be named as "E2864_QR.DOC" or "S2864IQR.PS" I hope that you agree with these suggestions - or do you have any other proposals ? electronic greetings from Vienna Manfred Recla *********************************************************************** SES Datensysteme, authorized ZyXEL Distributor [Austria] ZyXEL Technical Database Europe - Coordination Center Tel: +43-1-4895781-0 Fax: +43-1-4895797 BBS: +43-1-4898147 E-Mail: support@zyxel.co.at *********************************************************************** --- * Origin: 'The ISDN Link' - Vienna, Austria [+43-1-5851750] (16:43/0)
